It's somewhat cowardly, but Nicolas doesn't want anything spoiling his day, so he calls Mary's personal assistant & tells her that he's had a family emergency & he can't meet Mary tonight. His day is spent taping a 'live' TV appearance, and hurries home afterwards to take Jackie out on their 'date'.

Nicolas compliments her excessively, as though he needs to make up for lost time.

It's like he's falling in love with her all over again, like it's all new.

They have a drink before dinner, in a Santa Monica restaurant with a spectacular view of the ocean. Jackie is happy, and everything is as perfect as you could possibly make it.

And the along comes Mary, who does a wonderful performance of being thrilled to see Jackie and asking after the baby. Nicolas sits back dumbly unable to figure out what to do with this situation.

Eventually Nico gets up & says hello to Mary, too. Jackie already knows he & Mary have met and to not greet her as an acquaintance would be suspiciously rude. Nico can't look her in the eyes as she tells him how much she enjoys his song & how proud her friend Bill is of it.

Nicolas can't get away from Mary fast enough, and turns to Jackie right away, suggesting they go down to eat.
