Ulises

Heather isn't organized enough to plan even a simple backyard wedding. She has her list of three people she wants to invite: everything else is in Ulises' hands. So, while he's working on getting his condo sold & unloading his furniture on anyone who'll take it, and at the same getting construction permits to do some serious work on Heather's property (he's been concerned since he met her about the horrible fire trap she lives in. Though she cried when he told her he wants to get rid of all the underbrush & clean up the yard, as well as add a second floor to the house, he finally got her to see reason by reminding her how many people lost their homes & even their lives during last year's wildfires) he's also getting his wedding plans worked out. First & foremost, he has to tell his aunt Josefina, the woman who raised him after his parents' death. "Tia," he says as she picks up the phone, and though she has more nieces & nephews than she can count, she knows each one by voice, and exclaims, "Ulises! It's been so long!" So he tells her he's getting married & the first thing she wants to know is his bride's name: this will be the hardest part, he knows. There's no way to make 'Heather' sound Latin, so he just tells her, "Her name is Heather, she lives in Topanga." As he expected, he gets tsked at, "Ai! You're just like your father, always chasing after the anglo girls..." she says. Which really isn't fair, because no matter what his father was like, Ulises can't be accused of 'chasing' any girls, anglo or otherwise. Ulises' mother was one of those 'anglo' girls his father chased, right into marrying him. And though Ulises never met his mother's family, who disowned her as soon as she married his father, he still was stuck with the nickname 'gringo' for his fair hair throughout his childhood...so if he wants to marry a white girl, he figures he has every right to do so without explanation or excuse. Then, he must explain to her that, no it won't be a Church wedding, Heather has a child, and they are keeping it very small, "So, just you & Tio, Abuela, naturalmente, and Carlos & Teresa y sus hijos..." And he tells her, Heather speaks fluent Spanish, she'll fit right in. "I promise, Tia, you'll love her..."

Then, he has to call Heather's step-brother & make sure he has a tuxedo for the occaision. Though they aren't related in blood, Heather & Coby share a lot of traits. Ulises isn't walking into this blindly: he knows if he wants it done right he's even going to have to take care of his new brother-in-law, too.

He takes Coby to Beverly Hills to buy him a decent tux. Having recently come back from his Colorado trip, Coby entusiastically chatters on about boarding & skiing. He won the silver in the frestyle competition and he's very excited about it.

And then he drags Coby with him to buy the wedding ring. "Dude, this stuff is expensive," Coby exclaims as he browses the displays. "Well, you only have to do it once in your life," Ulises laughs. Coby laughs even harder, "Dude, my Dad has done it four times & counting. Heather's Mom was like just his second wife." Maybe so, Ulises thinks, but he's only going to do this once. And then, when Coby asks his advice on attracting women, Ulises has to laugh out loud. "You're asking the wrong guy," he says. Heather fell out of the sky right into his lap, & Ulises considers himself lucky to have been able to hold onto her, especially after standing her up on their second date, and the whole thing with Salome...his relationship is hardly a model for anyone else to follow.

"But you bagged Heather," Coby answers, "So you must know something."

"Don't talk about your sister like that," Ulises scolds, and then advises Coby not to talk about girls like that in general. Coby then explains to him how he met an Irish girl, working as a nanny for some rich Beverly Hills family. He really liked her, but because of her employment situation, she couldn't give him a phone number or any way to contact her. And he's been out of town for months now, he doesn't know how to let her know he's back. Ulises feels bad for the poor kid, he seems so sincere in his crush for this girl, but it seems so hopeless. Certainly, Ulises has no advice to give: without a way to call this girl, Coby has no real options. Then, Coby asks him if there will be any 'hotties' at his wedding. So much for Coby's sincerity....the Irish girl would do well not to call him, he thinks.
