Ulises

Ulises isn't sure he's going to like this food, but this music is pretty cool. He's heard sitar in some western rock tunes, but he'd never actually heard real Indian music before. Heather says she's got some cds at home..he's browsed her collection & she has a ton of stuff he's never heard of. Maybe he should start listening to some of them, he thinks.

But he isn't really here for the food (which was spicy & therefore good enough for him) or the music, he's on a mission of courtship. He starts out by asking something he's never been quite clear on, the status of her relationship to Amber's father, are they fully divorced, seperated or what? "Divorced?" Heather laughs, "No, I was never married. I don't even believe in marriage, anyway." "What do you mean you don't 'believe' in marriage?" he asks. As much as he loves Heather's odd view of the world, sometimes she says things that really shock him. She just kind of shrugs and says "It doesn't change the way you feel about someone, if you marry them or not." "It doesn't change the way you feel, Heather, but it changes your legal status in a very serious way," he says gravely, and as she makes no answer, he starts to list some of those important items, "If I were ever injured, Heather, they wouldn't give any information to my 'girlfriend' no matter I felt about her," he says. "I don't want to think about you being injured," she shudders & draws instinctively closer to him. This isn't exactly how Ulises wanted to propose, by scaring her about the dangers of his job. It's not his favorite thing to think about, either. He's not sure now where to pick up the conversation, and Heather does it for him, "Did you want get married, Ulises?" she asks, in her sweet, innocent voice. He should have known, it would be Heather & not him, who chose the exact moment, "Will you marry me, Heather?" he asks in return. He'll let her choose the moment, but he maintains his right to make the proposal.

"You are my soulmate, Ulises & that is way more serious than marriage anyway," Heather says very solemnly, "So, sure, I'll marry you, too, if that's what you want." He draws her into his arms & kisses her passionately. She's got some very odd ideas, but she said yes.

As they're leaving the restaurant, Ulises remembers the ring.....he'd completely forgeotten about it, since she popped the question on him before he could get himself up to it.

When her eyes light up like that, he can't resist her. Tonight they go home & dance & make love & celebrate. Tomorrow, Ulises starts preparing to sell his condo & arranging their marriage. Heather doesn't have any dream wedding fantasy she wants to live out, she'll go along with whatever he wants. Ulises is more about substance than style, he wants the marriage certificate, he wants it legal & clearly defined: ceremonies & fuss aren't his thing either, so it will be simple & sweet, a private backyard wedding on Valentine's day.
