Serena

While Serena is reading a tome of ancient spells, she gets one of her premonitions....she is going to have a visitor...
She greets Byron before he can ring her doorbell. This doesn't suprise him of course: they've known each other a long time now & he knows she will always know he's coming to see her before he arrives. "I wish you had come to Nepal with me, Serena," he says, "I saw so much there & I met the most fantastic people..." Serena smiles politely, "You know I don't have to physically travel to see a place or meet it's people, Byron. I can see it all from right here." She doesn't add that she can see him, too. No matter where he goes, or how long it is between visits, her dreams often take her to him, and she sees where he is & what he's doing...it's all part of the bond they share. "Yes, I know, Serena...but I still wish you'd come with me sometime, physically, not just in spirit," he says, "Traveling is lonely without you." He gets sentimetal like that sometimes, waxing nostalgiac for things that have passed: Serena nips it in the bud. "You aren't here for just a social visit, Byron. You want something from me," she says matter of factly.
Byron doesn't wait to be invited in, and Serena can only follow him into her house. "Serena," he says, very seriously, "This movie I'm working on now, it involves a lot of magic: immortals, demons, angels, creatures from every magical realm..I need your help. I want REAL magic..."
"Byron, you have effects and all that to create 'magic' for your movies. I serve the Goddess, I don't have time, or interest either, in playing make believe with you," she says, softening her words by patting him on the shoulder.
"It's not just 'make believe', Serena," he says, stamping his foot. "At least, I'm trying to create a reality out of a very deep & important story. It wouldn't take too much of your time to summon me a fairy or a demon...At least read the script before you make a decision." Serena stares at him gravely, her arms folded across her chest. "I've told you before, Byron, you waste your talents on these petty light shows. You were born with great gifts, you could have been a powerful mage if you had trained for it...If you had chosen this path, you would know I cannot just 'summon' a denizen of Xibalba or a creature from the Fae realms just to appear in your movie. The unearthly people always demand a heavy price for their services, no matter what realm they come from. Even your studio, with it's millions of dollars, wouldn't be prepared to pay their price...."

"I'm NOT wasting my talents,Serena," Byron insists, "My talent is film making. And my films are the best ever made. Because I can take any story & make it real..." His arrogance used to anger & frustrate her, now Serena just shrugs it off. She's never seen his movies: she doesn't care for films at all. But she knows his words are not just bluster: he's never studied the Magic Arts, but he does indeed have great gifts, which must manifest themselves through his films.
"Byron, try to understand...you have great Goddess-given gifts. You've chosen to channel them through story telling, and the stories you tell become real to those that see them. It IS a kind of magic you do, I concede that. But it is irresponsible magic, because you pay no heed to the consequences of the realities you create...Remember, you've given me scripts to read in the past & there has not been one that presented a world I would want to visit, let alone live in. You cannot ask me to help you create another such world..."
