Nicolas

Nico's got a lot on his mind while he's sitting in Bill Arthag's limo, watching him argue with Jackie. He can't hear what they're saying. He doesn't care: Bill can't talk her into loving him, & he's not sure he can anymore either. He's screwed that up too badly to ever get it back...

He watches as Bill disappears into Jackie's house, and all he can do is sit, wait & wonder if he'll even get to see her one more time. Then Bill comes out to fetch him. "You are going to jam with her," Bill says. And he is lead into Jackie's incredibly expensive home studio. Nico can't help but be in awe of the equipment she has in here. He doesn't know how Bill did it, but Jackie is willing to play with him, though she won't look at him. "Can you still play 'Ulcer Breakout'?" she asks him, explaining that she & her drummer were starting to work up that song for their next album. Nico's old band used to play song, whenever he & the bassist could convince Ben to do it. Ben hated that song, but Nico & the bass player liked doing it, even if Ben's vocals weren't strong enough for it, he was more of a screecher than a low growler. And Nico remembers something else about that song, too.."I remember you used to come out & dance when my band played that song," he ays to Jackie, and she actually looks up at him then. He tries to smile at her. "I didn't think you even noticed me at all back then," Jackie says, and Nicos heart sinks. Those were such bad times for him, the only joy he had was playing, and even that wa often ruined because Ben & the bassist could not get long even on stage, and Ty just didn't want to be in that kind of band..."It's not that I didn't notice, Jackie, it's just that I had to keep my bassist from killing Ben, every night, even on stage. Every time Ben would trip on his pedals..I swear, he was going to crack Ben's head open with his bass on stage... and our drummer was ready to quit at any moment. He was never into the music: he's in a ska band now...it took everything I had, all my attention, all my energy just to keep it together...and I did a pretty crappy job of it at that," Nico explains. "Well, you're too good of a guitarist for Ben...Do you want to play? If I remember right, you used to really shred on "Ulcer Breakout'," Jackie says, and tells him she's got the drum track recorded, as she starts queuing it up. Nico doesn't have to answer, he just picks up the guitar & checks the tuning. And when the drum track starts & Jackie plays the bass line, Nico shreds. It what he is best at.

Playing like this, he can forget everything, forget that he was planning to go back home, forget how badly he's screwed things up with Jackie. He can just play, and for 2 minutes and 35 seconds, there is nothing else in the world.

Jamming is a lot like sex, all the exhiliration, the emotional intensity. It is a hard thing to come down from, especially if you're in love with your bassist. When the 2 1/2 minute song is over, the drum track stomping down on his heart, Nico breaks down into tears. If it were anyone but Jackie seeing this, he'd be too ashamed for words. But all he wants is to be with Jackie...."Jackie, if I could have done it any diferent, I wouldn't have done those interviews...I never knew, after you were gone, if I would ever see you again...," he says.

She grabs his face then & kisses him just like the time she kissed him & told him she wanted him , in front of Psyche Delia's shop in Hollywood. She tells him if he leaves, she'll come with him. Nico tries to picture her in his home, he's pretty sure his mother & she wouldn't get along for two seconds..."But I don't think Bill would let me out of my contract, Nico...so, will you stay? For me?" she asks him. Nico sighs, it was all he needed to hear. "You're the only thing that could make stay now, Jackie," Nico says. And since Bill has left him here without a ride, it's not like he has a choice, anyway.
