Jackie

When she gets out of her limo, she sees that Bill's limo is already parked in front of her house & Bill is waiting for her at her door. Sometimes, she thinks Bill is the devil himself, except she doesn't believe in that stuff. Still, she does feel like she's sold him her soul. "Listen, Jackie, sweetheart, you can't keep running away & hiding," he pleads with her, "You wanted to be a rock star & here you are, a rock star. But that does come with some responsibilities, like making music....I know it's been hard on you, the way your guitarist took himself out, the way the media's been treating you...but you have to deal with it. And you have to get a new guitarist..unless you want to go solo. You know I've been wanting you to go solo since I signed your band..maybe this is your chance, eh?" Jackie sighs, "Bill, I've told you a thousand times, I'm not a singer, I play bass. I'll play bass in a BAND, even if I'm not the singer. I never wanted to be the singer in the first place..." and she storms into her house, Bill at her heels.

"Fine, Jackie, you can be in a band. But that means you need a band & right now all you have is a drummer. Who is being more difficult than even you right now. He's been threatening to quit all week, Jackie. I suggest you get your shit together, help me help you find a guitarist, convince Matt you actually are committed to this thing & get the hell back on the road..." Jackie sighs again, she hates to admit Bill is right, but he is. She's been avoiding Matt's calls all week just like she's been avoiding Bill's, she's been sitting around crying & feeling sorry for herself, and drinking way too much.."Listen, Jackie, I've brought a guitarist with me, I want you to hear him, jam a little & see what you think..," Bill says. "Bill, I can't acept a new guitarist without Matt being in on it," Jackie answers. "Well, you can hear him & if you like him, maybe Matt will be interested enough not to leave you, because then we'll be looking for a new drummer, understand?" "All right, Bill," Jackie sighs again, not liking when he's in the right, "But he better not be Ben, or anyone that sucks as hard as he does...I want a real guitarist, a good one."

Jackie thinks she must be getting stupid, or maybe it's all the whiskey. Of course Bill's mystery guitarist is Nico: who else could he have gotten so quickly after the whole office scene? Wel, at least she knows Nico is a good guitarist, a great one even, probably even better than her now dead guitarist was when he was alive. Back in the 'old days' she often wished Nico was in her band as often as she wished he was in her bed. Now that she's had him in her bed, she thinks, she might as well jam with him...though she can't look him in the face, because she loves him too much & she doesn't want to be taken in again. "Can you still play 'Ulcer Breakout'?" she asks "Matt & I were trying to work that one up for our next album, but our guitarist wasn't, um, around..." Jackie remembers Nico's old band would play that song from time to time, she remembers how well Nico played it..."I remember you used to come out & dance when my band played that song," Nico says, and Jackie can't help herself, she looks him right in the eyes & her heart melts to see him looking at her, smiling, but with very sad eyes. "I didn't think you even noticed me at all back then," Jackie says, trying to stay hard, reminding herself that he's only interested in her fame, no matter what he says. "It's not that I didn't notice, Jackie, it's just that I had to keep my bassist from killing Ben, every night, even on stage. Every time Ben would trip on his pedals..I swear, he was going to crack Ben's head open with his bass on stage... and our drummer was ready to quit at any moment. He was never into the music: he's in a ska band now...it took everything I had, all my attention, all my energy just to keep it together...and I did a pretty crappy job of it at that," Nico says. Jackie really has to work now at not feeling for him, not rushing up to kiss him. "Well, you're too good of a guitarist for Ben...Do you want to play? If I remember right, you used to really shred on "Ulcer Breakout'," Jackie says, knowing he'll play it with her. "I've got a recording of Matt playing drums on that song, while we were working it up," she says, queuing up the track. Nico doesn't answer, but he picks up the guitar & checks the tuning, which is answer enough. So the drum track starts playing & she & Nico jam.

'Ulcer Breakout' is 2 1/2 minutes of crashing, screaming thunder. Jackie has always loved the bass line, and Nico just shreds the guitar, as she knows he can. When you're into a really good jam, even a short one like this, all your other problems slip away. A really good jam is better than sex, and in many ways, when you play with another musician who really feels you, who can really get into your groove, it creates a much stronger bond than sex ever could. Jackie avoids looking at Bill now, dancing like moron...who does the Twist to a Butthole Surfers tune? Only Bill.....

"Jackie, if I could have done it any diferent, I wouldn't have done those interviews...I never knew, after you were gone, if I would ever see you again...," Nico says when their 2 1/2 minute session ends. And he actually starts to cry...Jackie can barely believe what she's seeing. It is too much for her, she isn't as hard as she'd like to be.

"Nico, if you back to Italy, I'm going to come with you," she hears herself saying, and for a moment she thinks it might even be a good idea, to quit this whole music scene & just settle down somewhere far away from everything. And she kisses him, because she's missed his kiss more than anything these past few weeks. "But I don't think Bill would let me out of my contract, Nico...so, will you stay? For me?" "You're the only thing that could make stay now, Jackie," Nico says. Bill has conveniently taken off, leaving Jackie & Nico to make up on their own.
