Coby

The phone rings as Coby is walking down the hallway, so he picks it up. It's a game company, making a big wave surf simulation game: they want to license Coby as a surfer character in their game. Awesome! They make an appointment for him to go into their office this week.

Coby approaches the kitchen with caution, and the knot in his stomach loosens when he sees Ti is alone there. Seeing her he can handle, though she broke his heart, but he dreads walking into a room and seeing them together. She's just finished eating & he interrupts her as she's cleaning up. "Ti, check this out, I'm going to be a character in a game," he tells her. She sighs heavily as she answers,"We're all just characters in a game, Coby." She has that gloomy expression she was wearing when he had just returned from Colorado last winter, when she and the boyfriend before him had broken up. Her misery puzzles him, like he had dumped her for some other chick, and not the other way around. Trying to lighten her mood, he smiles at her, "Sure, Ti, but I'm going to be in a game I can play. A surf simulation game." Ti smiles at him weakly, "Hey, that's really great, Coby, congratulations," she says. She's trying to sound happy, but Coby sees she breaking down.

Just like that night on the beach in Venice, she's coming apart in front of him, and he wants to hold her & let her cry on his chest. "Ti, are you okay?" he asks softly, taking her hand. "I'm fine," she says as a tear rolls down her cheek. Coby wipes it away gently. "Ti, that boyfriend you were so miserable about losing last winter, did you break up with him, too?" Her eyebrows knit angrily at him and her eyes gush with tears...he got that right.

"I don't want to watch you do this to yourself over me like you did over the last guy, okay, Ti?" Coby says as he takes her in his arms, "Especially if I know it's the other guy that gets to kiss away your tears." She backs out of his embrace and looks at him sadly. "I wouldn't cry in front of Rainier," she says, "I'd be embarrassed." Coby runs a finger along her cheek following the path of her tears. He could kiss her now, she would most definitely let him. But where would that lead?

Coby would love to make love to her again, one more time, his instincts push him towards lifting her in his arms & carrying her up the stairs. But not if she's back to the new guy again tomorrow, not if he has to endure the same break up. Better to walk away now..."You'll be okay, Ti," he says hurriedly, patting her shoulder before he sprints up the stairs to his room. Living here in this building with her is going to be torture.

Coby decides to hang out at Tanner's place & try to chill out and get over Ti. But even with excitement of the game deal, Coby's mood is down and Tanner has pulled out Mr. Woofie. How can he think that puppet actually cheers anyone up?

"Who do you think that is calling, Mr. Woofie?" Tanner asks his puppet as the phone starts to ringing, "Maybe it's a chick, Mr. Woofie, since some of us don't sit around moping about girls that dumped us." Coby rolls his eyes, "Just get the phone, Tanner," he sighs as Tanner runs over to his phone.
