They hit the Good Luck club on the way back to Hollywood and get a beer & play a little pool. With the 'other guy' not around, everything seems normal enough, but as soon as they get home, there he will be again, his rival, after his girl.

All of a sudden, she's talking about being interested in doing graphics for computer games. Coby is not sure, but he suspects this has something to do with the new guy.

It's maybe a little childish, but Coby has had enough of the new guy, and says so. "I don't like the way he looks at you, Ti," he says, and as he's about to tell her he also doesn't like the way she looks back at him, his cellphone rings. This isn't a number he gives to just anyone, it is reserved for news about surf & snow conditions. "Yeah?" he answers. "Dude...Mavericks, tomorrow. Big waves. Big, big waves.....It's looking good for the contest," Tanner says. "I'm so there," Coby says immediately, "Are you driving or am I picking you up?" Coby arranges to pick up Tanner just before sunrise for the road trip up north.

After he hangs up, he takes Ti's face in his hands, "There's a big wave contest at Mavericks, it only happens every few years, when the waves are big enough" he tells her, "I'm picking Tanner up early tomorrow...if there's any chance you want to come & watch, I'd be happy to take you along," he offers. "We'll be gone a few days." There is no question of Coby missing this contest, the opportunity to ride waves like that does not come very often. But the big waves are coming at a bad time, when he is also supposed to be competing for his girl. Coby understands competition, and by walking off the field now, his opponent could do all kind of damage during his absence. It's a risk he has to take, the contest is too important. But he's not entirely disappointed when she turns down the offer to come along. He can't see her enjoying herself, on the beach all day, waiting for the big waves to roll in, to hear that the contest is beginning, and to watch, for hours, while surfers try to catch & ride the biggest waves.

Coby strokes her face, maybe, he thinks, for the last time, because who knows what will happen while he's gone. "I can see what you're going through, Ti, you like this guy, you don't know what you want to do with me. So now you have a couple of days, I'll be gone, and you can decide if you want to break my heart. Just make sure you do it so we can still be friends, okay?" he says to her, whisper quiet, and kisses her just as hot tears start to spill down her cheeks.
