Ulises

Heather comes in just as he's finished dressing & she kisses him good morning. She offers him breakfast, but he won't be able to eat until he says what he has to say. He starts the speech he's been practicing in his head, but she interrupts him by saying that Serena told her they were each a mirror image of the other, and that she knows he's a drug dealer just like her. Whatever he'd been planning to say is out the window now.

He can't believe she actually thinks he sells drugs. "No Heather," he says, & he explains it to her, he's not in the same business as her, but the opposite business, a vice cop. "It's all just been a big lie? You made me love you & it was all just so you could arrest me?" she cries. Her shocked look of betrayal breaks his heart. He knew this wasn't going to go easy, but but it is going worse than he even expected. He takes hold of her face so she is looking in his eyes as he explains to her that he never suspected she was a drug dealer until after she left the club last night, that he even thought Salome was the dealer he was looking for. "None of it was a lie, you have to believe me," he pleads, praying he has not now lost the trust she had in him. "And I'm not going to arrest you," he adds.

She falls into his arms crying & tells him over & over that she loves him. Ulises breathes a deep, relieved breath. But now is the hard part: he tells her she has to stop selling on the street. She amazes him by telling him that director Byron Palisades came by last night after she left the club & arranged to buy a lot of her legitimate crop, as well as the other & she was getting off the street anyway. Byron Palisades! 'The Watchmen' is Ulises' favorite film adaptation of a comic book & he can't believe Heather gets to sell the award winning director pot while he had to be talking to Mary 'Boom Boom'.

"Heather, do you smoke a lot of that stuff you sell?" he asks her. He loves her no matter what, but as a cop, he's trained to detect signs of marijuana use & Heather hasn't got ashtrays & the house, while scented from incense in every room, doesn't smell of smoke (he can smell difference). And he's tasted her sweet kisses: there's no smoke in there. She explains that she doesn't smoke it at all, and he sighs a bit in relief. "I eat it," she continues & he is for a moment speechless. "You mean like in brownies?" he begins to grasp her meaning, and she tells him not just brownies, in everything. He thinks about the euphoric feeling he'd get after eating Heather's food & he realizes she's fed it to him too. Heather is sweet & well meaning, but so utterly clueless sometimes, he thinks. "Some people have to take drug tests for their jobs, Heather," he reminds her, hoping to prod her to be more responsible. She looks at him with her sweet eyes & he has to forgive her.

They've talked so long, Amber is home from school & it's dinner time. Ulises never imagined himself as having any kind of normal family life: Heather's life is far from normal, it's true, but he fits into it hand in glove. He is thrilled when they invite him to get their Christmas tree with them.

As the sun sets, Ulises has to leave for work: there are plenty of crimes going on out there even with Heather safe at home. As she's kissing him good bye Heather quietly tells him about a crack dealer in the flop house next to the Motel 6 across from Coby's apt. building. His customers are nuisance to the whole neighborhood. And then she invites him to let himself in again tonight too.
