Ulises

Ulises hits Hollywood first thing next day, where he meets Mary "Boom Boom" Townie, an exotic dancer & sometime prostitute, one of Ulises' many informants. Ulises became a police officer to enforce the law & keep people safe from the kind of thing that happened to his parents. It didn't occur to him that keeping society safe would mean having to maintain relationships with petty criminals, thugs & prostitutes, just to pump them for information about bigger criminals.

"Boom Boom" tells him some hippie chick has been hanging out here & selling bud. "I've been clean myself," she says "So I don't know this chick's name or anything, but I've seen her around here." Hippie chick, Ulises thinks & he remembers Salome, the girl he met here the other day, the one who gave him her number. She had kind of a hippie thing going on, he should check it out. But that is later...right now he has to motor to Venice & meet Heather.

They meet for the Dick Dale afternoon happy hour at Jack's Tiki Shack & dance, dance, dance. It's amazing, but Heather loves surf guitar, too.

While they're having a drink, Heather astounds him by breaking into fluent Spanish & telling him her life story. The daughter of international relief workers, she grew up in El Salvador, Guatemala & Colombia, until she was twelve years old and her father was 'disappeared' & her mother moved with her to L.A. Ulises has never spoken to anyone about witnessing his parents' murder before, but he is so moved by Heather's story that he opens up to her.

They share such a deep bond... Ulises is falling very deeply in love.

They go out on the beach to watch the sun set. It is the most beautiful & romantic thing in the world...and then Heather starts pulling off his shirt. He tells her 'not in public' & she replies, "Are you afraid the cops will come after us?" The way she says 'cops' puts a chill up his spine...he loves this girl more than anything & has shared with her his deepest sorrow but he still hasn't told her he's a cop. Now, he knows, is the time, but for some reason he cannot bring himself to say it.

He kisses her goodbye & takes off. He's going to have to tell Heather he is a cop, he realizes, but he'll have to brace himself for rejection first.
